In Las Vegas, Nevada, MMA heavyweight Maurice Greene defeated Gian Villante by third-round submission (arm triangle choke) Saturday night on a UFC Fight Night card.
Greene (9-4), a recent arrival at Albuquerque’s Jackson-Wink MMA, snapped a two-fight losing streak. Villante is 17-12.
“It’s critical you win all your fights,” an emotional Greene said. “My job was on the line tonight. I want to move my family. I needed to win to move my family. I spent a few weeks at Jackson-Winkeljohn to get it done. I know I can get it done under pressure.”
The end came in stunning fashion, shortly after Villante dropped Greene with a left hand and punished him with strikes on the ground. Greene, seemingly in trouble, found the choke hold and forced the tap-out.
“It just feels good to be back in the win column,” he said. “…It feels good to get a submission. Everybody just thinks I’m a striker, but I work a lot on my Jiu-Jitsu. I’m not threatened by anyone on the ground.”
