ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — One man is clinging to life and another is in police custody after a family dispute erupted into gunfire Tuesday afternoon in an East Central neighborhood.

Gilbert Gallegos, an Albuquerque police spokesman, said the man who was shot is in the hospital but “unlikely to survive.” The shooter, a family member, has been detained and is being “very cooperative.”

He said officers responded around 2:30 p.m. to a home in the 400 block of Virginia NE, near Copper, after a man told 911 he had shot someone who tried to run him over. Police found a man in a pickup truck who had been shot in the head and took the alleged shooter into custody.

“This is an ongoing investigation and updates will be made when available,” he said.

Gallegos said detectives are still investigating but police are “concerned” about the family dispute aspect of the slaying as that was the case with two other recent homicides, on last Tuesday in Barelas and another, days later, at Carlisle and Menaul.

In both instances, he said the shooter and victim knew each other, police spoke with but did not arrest the shooter in Barelas as detectives look into whether it was justified and officers are still searching for the shooter in the other case.
