Combat sports: Waterson back in cage on Aug. 22

Albuquerque strawweight MMA fighter Michelle Waterson will return to action on an Aug. 22 UFC Fight Night card against Angela Hill, according to multiple online sources.

The UFC has announced neither a site nor the matchups for an Aug. 22 card. But Waterson appeared to confirm the news on Tuesday on her Instagram account — posting a photo of herself with a bruise on her face and writing, “Day one of fight camp in the books!”

Hill was far more cryptic, posting a video of herself, shouting, “I’m comin’ for ya! I’m comin’ for ya! I’m (expletive) comin’ for ya!”

The story was first reported by mmajunkie.com.

Waterson has a 17-8 professional record. Hill is 12-8.

Both fighters are coming off disputed losses by split decision — Waterson to Carla Esparza on May 9, Hill to Claudia Gadelha a week later.

MONEY MATTERS: UFC heavyweight Maurice Greene (9-4), a recently arrived teammate of Waterson’s at Albuquerque’s Jackson-Wink MMA, was paid $60,000 — $30,000 plus a $30,000 win bonus — for his victory by third-round submission (arm triangle choke) over Gian Villante (17-12) on Saturday in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Greene was paid another $5,000 from the UFC’s Promotional Guidelines Compliance program, which covers outfitting requirements, media obligations and other items under the fighter code of conduct.

Villante, who has been fighting in the UFC for far longer than has Greene, was paid $75,000 plus $15,000 from the Promotional Guidelines Compliance program.

… Albuquerque featherweight boxer Jason Sanchez (15-2, eight knockouts) was paid $25,000 for his loss by unanimous decision to Christopher Diaz (26-2, 15 KOs) in Las Vegas on June 23. Diaz also earned $25,000.

All the above figures were released by the Nevada State Athletic Commission or by the UFC.
