Paseo del Norte reopens after two crashes Tuesday night

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Paseo del Norte has reopened in both directions after Albuquerque police officers responded to two overnight vehicle crashes, one of them fatal.

Police spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said a black SUV was traveling west on Paseo del Norte, east of San Pedro, when a driver believed to be drunk struck the vehicle, causing it to lose control and crash.

The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspected intoxicated driver, identified as Zachary Louis Jaramillo, was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide.

During that investigation, an Albuquerque Public Schools police officer assisted APD by redirecting traffic at Paseo and Louisiana when a man, identified as Phillip Benson, crashed his motorcycle into a stationary APS police vehicle.

Benson was ejected from the motorcycle and is recovering from serious internal injuries, according to police.
