Sports Speak Up! On racial slurs, youth baseball and potential Lobo benefactors

THERE’S FINALLY a serious discussion occurring to rid the NFL of racial slurs and stereotypes. It’s long overdue. But have heart all of you people totally invested in the name. The team can keep the name but simply use a redskin potato or a redskin peanut as the mascot in place of the denigrating Native imagery. And it will more accurately reflect the actual play of the team.

APPARENTLY WE haven’t heard back yet from Jeff Bezos or Bill Gates, the two wealthiest people on earth, both having Albuquerque connections with the hope that they would help out the struggling UNM Athletic Department. We’ll drop down to the 5th richest person, Warren Buffett. His cousin George Buffet founded Albuquerque’s famous Buffett’s Candies. Of course they’re all long shots but don’t forget about that New Mexico horse in the 2009 Kentucky Derby. Mine That Bird passed 18 horses and won the race by 6¾ lengths, paying out at 50 to 1. Who’s laughing now?

SO THEY ARE pushing once again to have the Redskins change their name. What’s next, the Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves?? Then should we move on to cruelty to animals with the Cubs, Bears, Lions, etc. It could go on and on. Common people, this is ridiculous.

I READ in the Journal about youth baseball teams raveling to Arizona and other states to compete in tournaments in defiance of travel advisories issued by the governor and the NM Department of Health. Travel to Arizona and Texas to play baseball while infections are surging in those two states is completely irresponsible on the part of these organizations, coaches and officials. Remember, nobody is immune and everybody is at risk in a pandemic. Maybe it’s time to teach our kids a different set of values: the greater good, respect for others, self-sacrifice and cooperation.
