Clerk slain outside Roswell gas station

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A dispute over an alleged shoplifting incident ended with a teenager fatally shooting a convenience store clerk early Tuesday morning in Roswell, according to the Roswell Police Department.

Police spokesman Todd Wildermuth said two men, both 21, and a 16-year-old boy are being questioned — but have not been charged — in the death of 36-year-old Michael Crabtree.

He said criminal charges are “being developed” to be brought before the District Attorney’s Office.

Wildermuth said around 12:20 a.m. officers were called to a fight outside the Allsup’s at South Sunset Avenue and West Poe Street. They found Crabtree lying on the ground outside the store with multiple gunshot wounds. He died at a hospital soon after.

He said the two men were inside the store when Crabtree accused one of them of attempting to shoplift. The other man “became irate” and went outside, where Crabtree eventually followed.

Once outside, Wildermuth said Crabtree was physically confronted by both men and pulled out a knife.

“Gunshots were then fired at Crabtree by the 16-year-old who had come to the store with the two men and was waiting in a vehicle,” he said.

Wildermuth said the teen and two men were found at separate locations in the city soon after.
