SANTA FE — New Mexico reported its second-highest number of new coronavirus cases Wednesday and eight additional deaths, pushing the statewide death toll to 527 residents.
The 290 virus cases confirmed by testing Wednesday are higher than any other day except June 5, when an outbreak at the Otero County prison helped push the total to 330 cases.
The increase isn’t simply a result of more testing.
Wednesday’s results showed a positive rate of 6.5%, up from 4.4% the day before and 3.6% overall since testing began in March. Altogether, the state has now confirmed 14,017 cases of the virus out of 389,687 tests — for a positive rate of 3.6%.
