Santa Ana set to host women’s golf amateurs Friday, Saturday

Normally, the New Mexico-West Texas Women’s Amateur Championship is a three-day, 54-hole event.

But these are far from normal times.

The tournament will still include the Albuquerque Women’s Championship, but it will be a two-day, 36-hole event. It will take place Saturday and Sunday at Santa Ana Golf Club.

The Sun Country Amateur Golf Association reduced the entry fee this year to make it easier for the commitment to play. It has resulted in a field of 68 players, including 2019 Albuquerque Women’s Championship winner Samantha Surette and 2018 champion Shannelle Tafoya.

Naomi Ramirez, the defending NM-WT Women’s Amateur champion, is not included in the field, according to the SCAGA website. Ramirez, now an incoming junior at UTEP, won the title by four strokes against Surrette, who captured the Albuquerque Women’s Championship by one stroke over Tafoya and Ashlee Garrett.

The golfers from the greater Albuquerque area vie for both the NM-WT Women’s Amateur and the Albuquerque Women’s Championship, as the events run simultaneously.

This will be the fourth “major” event that the Sun Country Golf House has conducted since the coronavirus pandemic shut down the schedule back in March.

The three events prior to this weekend’s women’s amateur were played rather smoothly as Sun Country staff and competitors followed new safety guidelines.

The New Mexico-West Texas Men’s Amateur Championship opened the schedule reboot June 12-14 at Horizon Golf Club in Horizon City, Texas. Michael Salazar of El Paso won the event.

The Junior Stableford Championship took place June 22-23 at Paradise Hills Golf Club, where Samuel Jones won the title.

Gerome Espinoza, an assistant professional at Albuquerque Country Club, and Evan Sales, the head pro at Angel Fire Country Club, won the Sun Country Section PGA Pro-Pro Team Championship by two strokes at Sandia Golf Club in the two-day event that concluded June 30.

The New Mexico-West Texas Senior Amateur Championship is scheduled for Aug. 26-27 at Sandia Golf Club.
