Bernalillo County now has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the state as New Mexico approaches 17,000 cases, officials said Sunday.
State officials reported two more deaths due to COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 571.
Officials reported 241 new cases in the state Sunday, 99 of them in Bernalillo County. The state’s most populous county has reported 3,775 cases, surpassing McKinley County, which has reported 3,754.
Those who died include an Eddy County man in his 50s and a McKinley County man in his 50s. Both men were hospitalized and had underlying conditions, according to the state Department of Health.
Lea County, in southeastern New Mexico, reported the second-highest number of new cases Sunday, with 35. Doña Ana County reported 30 new cases, Sandoval County reported 14, and Santa Fe County reported 10.
The statewide total is now 16,971 cases, with 6,764 designated as having recovered. There are 161 people hospitalized with the disease around the state.
San Juan County now has the third-highest number of cases, with 2,834. The county in northwestern New Mexico, which has been hit hard by the disease, reported only six new cases on Sunday.
Doña Ana County has 1,717 cases, and Sandoval County has 919.
No new cases among state or federal inmates were reported Sunday.
