ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Today’s Outlook celebrates the accomplishments of the recipients of this year’s Women in Business awards.
This impressive collection of talented, driven and successful professionals is a tribute to how far women have come in the workplace in recent years and decades.
It’s hard to fathom how drastically the landscape has shifted, but really, it wasn’t that long ago that, as a relative recently told me, most women had three general options for careers: teacher, nurse or secretary. Challenging careers, absolutely, and rewarding – but what a difference a half-century makes in terms of choice.
I remember a conversation with an older relative where I mentioned in passing that I’d never been to see a male doctor, with the exception of dentists and ophthalmologists. How funny, she responded, I’ve actually never been to a female doctor.
Just peruse the list of this year’s honorees, and you’ll see representatives from industries as wide-ranging as lending, media, law and medicine.
The winners of this year’s four major awards – for Excellence, Leadership, Vision and Development – cite passion and work ethic as the keys to their success (page 10).
And several other award-winners shared on this page how mentorship from other women has helped shape their careers – lessons for all women in leadership to take to heart when considering how to support younger generations.
The roles of the women listed here have perhaps never been more important than today, as New Mexico’s economy is taking a battering from the ongoing pandemic. In each of their industries and in each of their roles, this year’s New Mexico Women in Business are part of the way forward – and we’ll need every ounce of drive, ingenuity and passion they have to move past this difficult chapter.
