Albuquerque-based George’s Dry Cleaners closed permanently Thursday due to declining business following the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

Business at the cleaners at 619 Amherst NE started to dry up about a month after the pandemic started and it never returned, co-owner Sandra Whiting said.

Whiting said that with many business professionals working from home, there was a lack of need for dry cleaning.

After several months of seeing only a trickle of customers, Whiting said that she and her husband David made the decision to close the business.

The couple owned the business for 17 years after purchasing it from its previous owners.

A report released last week by Yelp found that between March 1 and July 10, 199 businesses in Albuquerque permanently closed. Across the entire state, 355 businesses permanently closed, the report said.
