ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Even a big meal couldn’t keep bargain hunters at home. Many area shoppers got a jump on their holiday shopping late Thursday as some retailers opened their doors hours before Thanksgiving Day ended.
Toys R Us, Target and Sears were among those that opened before midnight.
“I’m actually glad,” Nancy Olivares said about the 8 p.m. start time, as she waited in line outside Toys R Us in Uptown Albuquerque. She and her daughter, Samantha Sanders, planned to split off into two directions once inside the store to get everything on their list.
Black Friday — the traditional start of the holiday shopping season — has inched earlier in recent years.
Retailers hoped the Thanksgiving openings would draw shoppers who prefer to head to stores after their turkey dinner rather than brave the crowds early the next day, The Associated Press reported.
