MMA: Means wins his 30th

In Las Vegas, Nevada, Moriarty’s Tim Means achieved a milestone — his 30th MMA victory — on Saturday with a win by unanimous decision over Argentina’s Laureano Staropoli on a UFC Fight Night card.

The judges scored the welterweight fight 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28 as Means improved his record to 30-12-1. Staropoli is 9-3.

“I’m just proud to get a win and stay healthy,” Means said afterward on the espn+ streaming of Saturday’s card.

Means had lost his previous fight in February at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho in front of family, friends and fans.

He’d said this week that he was too emotional that night, his mind on two friends from Moriarty who recently had died in a car crash.

Saturday, he was all business.

“I was just showing my hometown and my kids and stuff that (when) adversity hits us we can’t quit,” he said. “We have to get ourselves back up on that horse and get back up on our feet and keep trying.

“We lose some fights or whatever, but we’re not quitters.”

The first round was evenly contested, and two of the three judges scored it for Staropoli. But Means, with no worse than a standoff in striking and consistently forcing Staropoli’s back to the cage, decisively won rounds two and three.
