ON AUGUST 5 the Mountain West Conference Board of Directors, made up of university presidents, announced they had voted to cancel some fall sports and postpone others until at least September 26. Five days later on August 10, the MWC announced that all fall sports, the most significant being football, have been indefinitely postponed. Could it possibly have been the Commander suggesting that UNM “stoke the flames” with other MWC member institutions’ presidents to reverse course? Can you say “permanent fund cash”? If not, kiss UNM athletics goodbye. Tough times lie ahead. Now it’s all about being United?

I RECALL THAT three of the Covid 19 guidelines for Major League Baseball players were: to wear masks in the dugouts, to avoid physical contact like high-fives and to not spit. Looks to me like many of the players are totally ignoring these guidelines, and I wonder why Major League Baseball executives not taking steps to bring the violators into compliance.
PROPS TO THE ACC, Big 12, and SEC for not caving in to the media-fueled panic. The NCAA National Champion wasn’t coming from the Pac-12 or Big Ten anyway.

THE BIG TEN and the Mountain West get it, hopefully the ACC will also. We (have more than) 170,000 Americans lost to Covid. Somewhere, sometime, somehow, cooler heads have to prevail. Safety is essential, sports events are not right now. For that matter sportswriters aren’t either if they can’t recognize that the orange guy in the White House has no clue.
Uptown Ed and tarheelbill weigh in from opposite sides of the debate, yet they can agree to blame the media. There is hope in this country. — Randy, Journal
PLEASE ZANE (Martin), say it is not true. I would love to know more details as to what went into his decision to leave UNM. Regarding pressures UNM faces to cancel the upcoming season, surely every college across the country is having to face this reality. His hard nosed style of play will be missed.
