Portales Peanut Butter Co. to Decide Its Future

PORTALES — The New Mexico peanut butter company linked to a salmonella outbreak is scheduled to decide its fate.

The Portales News-Tribune reports that Sunland Inc. is planning a board meeting Monday to discuss the company’s future.

Sunland spokeswoman Katalin Coburn says to her knowledge there have been no layoffs and the country’s largest organic peanut processing plant plans to move forward as officials attempt to reopen.

Sunland shuttered its operations in Portales and began a top-to-bottom scrubbing in late September after salmonella was found in peanut butter it made for Trader Joe’s. The company then issued a voluntary recall of hundreds of products. Forty-one illnesses in 20 states have been linked to the peanut butter.
