Sandia and AHS Boys Will Meet
Let’s tip it off.
The 2012-13 high school basketball season begins in earnest either this afternoon or tonight, with a majority of the boys and girls teams in the metro area set to play their first games either at 5:30 p.m. or 7 p.m.
There are a couple of interesting boys games at 5:30 p.m., with La Cueva visiting Cibola, and Sandia going to Albuquerque High.
Defending Class 5A state champion Eldorado opens at 7 at home against West Mesa.
Volcano Vista’s boys are expected to have an outstanding season, but the Hawks, who open today at 5:30 p.m. at home against Rio Grande, still have several athletes playing football.
The Volcano Vista girls, last season’s 5A champ, are home to Rio Grande at 7 p.m.
La Cueva is at Cibola at 7 p.m.; the Cougars knocked the Bears from last year’s playoffs.
Atrisco Heritage, playing as a 5A school for the first time, is at 3A Sandia Prep, with the girls at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30.
Among the coaches at new schools who make their debuts today are David Gibson with the Manzano boys (at Moriarty at 7 p.m.), Robert Perea with the La Cueva girls and Mark Warren with the Rio Grande girls. New Del Norte boys coach Ryan Noce has his first game Thursday against Santa Fe.
The event usually is played the first week in December, but that will not be the case this season.
Instead, the metro championships will be held in early January, after everyone gets back from the holidays. Many coaches said they prefer it be moved back to make for a more competitive event.
