The New Mexico Open, which was scheduled to take place this week at Sandia Golf Club, was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic and the state’s quarantine requirements for traveling, said Dana Lehner, outgoing executive director of Sun Country PGA.
The New Mexico Open had been scheduled to begin Tuesday and end on Thursday.
Two weeks ago, Sun Country and Sandia Golf Club decided to cancel the tournament and have it return in 2021.
“We kept waiting, hoping the quarantine would be removed and it wasn’t,” Lehner said. “Once we got to the two-week window, we just felt like we couldn’t wait anymore for all those people who are making plans to come here from not only across the region but even across the nation. We felt in conjunction with the leadership with Sandia to bag it this year and get excited for 2021.”
