New Mexico reports 159 new COVID cases, no deaths

New Mexico recorded 159 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday but no additional deaths.

Cases are down slightly after the state reported at least 200 new cases over each of the previous four days.

The total number of cases in the state has now reached 28,844, according to a Sunday news release from the Governor’s Office.

Bernalillo County led, with 32 cases. Eddy County, where Carlsbad and Artesia are located, recorded 29 new cases, for a total of 824.

Dona Aña County had 20 cases, Lea County had 17 and Santa Fe and Chaves counties each had 11.

Eleven other counties reported at least one case.

A state inmate at the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility in Valencia County also tested positive for the disease, bringing the number of positive tests in that facility to 34, according to the state Department of Health.

The number of deaths in New Mexico due to complications from COVID-19 remains at 870.

There are 66 people hospitalized with the disease throughout the state, and there have been 16,301 recoveries, according to the state.

State officials have found at least one case of COVID-19 among residents and staff at 26 long-term care facilities across New Mexico.
