The regular-season ended without much drama for New Mexico United on Sunday.
El Paso Locomotive FC wrapped up first place in the USL Championship’s Group C with a resounding 4-0 road win over Real Monarchs. El Paso finished with 32 points, while runner-up United had 27.
New Mexico did not play on the season’s final weekend and ended up playing one fewer match than El Paso because a Sept. 23 contest against Rio Grande Valley was postponed because of positive COVID-19 test results within RGVFC’s “covered persons” umbrella. That match would have been rescheduled contest had El Paso played to a loss or a draw Sunday. Locomotive FC’s win meant a United-RGVFC match would not impact the Group C standings so it will not be played.
Instead, New Mexico (8-4-3) will open the USL Championship playoffs at Group D winner San Antonio FC (10-3-3) on Saturday at 7 p.m.
