Darnell will begin work as a deputy chief of staff for Martinez’s office on Monday, the Governor’s Office confirmed today.
He will fill the vacancy created last month when Ryan Cangiolosi stepped down to take a newly-created job with the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.
Darnell will earn an annual salary of $95,000 in the new position, which is less than the $115,000 per year that Cangiolosi had been paid.
His previous position in Martinez’s office will be filled by Enrique Knell, who worked as a campaign spokesman for former U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M., and has most recently been serving as a public information officer for the state Children, Youth and Families Department.
