SANTA FE, N.M. — A 43-year-old Santa Fe man was arrested Tuesday evening, accused of being a pimp by the Santa Fe Police.
Gerardo Sustaita, who was on electronic monitoring while awaiting trial on an unrelated rape charge, is in the Santa Fe County jail, charged with promoting prostitution, accepting the earnings of a prostitute and violating the conditions of his release, according to Sgt. Andrea Dobyns. She said the rape charge was based on an allegation that Sustaita had sex with a 15-year-old girl.
Dobyns said police got a tip at about 7:40 p.m. Tuesday that someone was possibly trafficking drugs out of a room at the Motel 6 on Cerrillos Road. Officers watched the hotel room and did a traffic stop on two men and a woman who left the hotel in a black Mazda.
The woman told them she was a prostitute, Dobyns said. The two men said Sustaita had told them he had two women for them to choose from. The men and the alleged prostitute said there was a young woman still in the hotel room.
When officers returned there, they found Sustaita but not another woman, Dobyns said. They interviewed Sustaita, who said he helps the woman police spoke to earlier find clients.
He said there was a young woman in the room earlier who was calling her mother for a ride, according to the sergeant. Dobyns said police do not have information to locate the other woman.
“Our concern is that it’s a juvenile, but we’re not sure,” Dobyns said.
The sergeant said the investigation will continue and she asked anyone with information to contact Santa Fe Police.
Dobyns said the two men and the woman were not charged. She said they cooperated in the investigation, and the woman was “possibly a victim in this.”
