New Mexico set multiple COVID-19 records on Sunday, including the highest number of deaths reported in a single day.
The state Department of Health reported that 33 more New Mexicans have died of the disease, one of whom was a teenage girl from McKinley County. That number surpasses the previous one-day record of 28, set Tuesday.
Health officials reported 2,468 new cases of the disease, which brings the seven-day average number of new daily cases to 2,530 – also a record. The average number of daily deaths over the last seven days has also reached a record of 24.
Hospitalizations related to COVID-19 continue to climb. The statewide hospitalization count hit 845 on Sunday, yet another troubling record. On Nov. 16 the Department of Health began tracking hospitalizations by gathering data from hospitals each day. That same day 738 hospitalizations were reported. Previously, hospitalizations were reported to DOH through investigation and contact tracing.
Bernalillo County topped the list on Sunday with 710 new cases reported Sunday. Seven other counties reported new cases in the triple digits, including Doña Ana County with 220, San Juan County with 193, McKinley County with 190, Sandoval County with 161, Lea County with 121, Santa Fe County with 107 and Valencia County with 103.
There were also 48 new cases among state prisoners, including 22 at the Lea County Correctional Facility. Five federal detainees around the state also tested positive.
The number of deaths due to COVID-19 complications is now 1,383. Those whose deaths were reported Sunday are:
• Seven women from Bernalillo County, ranging from their 60s to their 90s, who all had underlying health conditions.
• A man in his 80s from Bernalillo County who had underlying conditions.
• Four women from Chaves County, including three in their 60s and one in her 70s. Three were hospitalized and all four had underlying conditions.
• A man in his 60s from Chaves County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.
• A woman in her 50s from Cibola County.
• A man in his 80s from Cibola County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.
• Two men from Doña Ana County, one in his 50s and one in his 80s who had underlying conditions. Both men were hospitalized.
• A woman in her 60s from Doña Ana County who had underlying conditions.
• A woman in her 60s from Eddy County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.
• Two women from Lea County, one in her 70s and one in her 80s, who both had underlying health conditions.
• A man in his 80s from Lea County who had underlying conditions.
• A female in her teens from McKinley County who had underlying conditions.
• Two men from Sandoval County, one in his 40s and one in his 100s, who both had underlying conditions.
• A woman in her 60s from Sandoval County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.
• Two women from San Juan County, one in her 50s and one in her 60s, The younger woman was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.
• Four men from San Juan County, including two in their 70s, one in his 80s and one in his 90s. One was hospitalized and three had underlying conditions.
• A man in his 90s from Taos County who had underlying conditions.
The state now has a total of 81,896 cases, of which 28,857 have been designated as having recovered.
