NM virus cases continue downward trend

New Mexico health officials on Thursday reported 1,708 additional cases of coronavirus, continuing the state’s recent downward trend.

It’s the sixth straight day new cases have gone down since New Mexico reported a record of 3,664 cases Nov. 19.

On Thursday, the state’s seven-day average for new cases was 2,243. The average hit a record of 2,672 on Monday.

New Mexico also added 18 deaths Thursday after reporting more than 20 deaths for the previous two days. The seven-day death average, which hit a record of 24 on Sunday, was at 23.86 on Thursday.

There were 880 people hospitalized with the virus around the state Thursday, down from 897 hospitalizations reported Wednesday.

Bernalillo County led with 671 new cases. Doña Ana County had 182, Sandoval County had 120, San Juan County had 119, McKinley County had 100, Santa Fe County had 84 and Valencia County had 78.

New Mexico now has 1,469 deaths attributed to the disease. Those whose deaths were reported Thursday were:

• Four women in their 70s from Bernalillo County. Two were hospitalized, and all but one had underlying health conditions.

• Three men, ranging from their 50s to their 80s, from Bernalillo County. All three were hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

• Three women, two in their 70s and one in her 90s, from Doña Ana County. One was hospitalized, and all three had underlying health conditions.

• Two men in their 60s from Doña Ana County who had underlying conditions. One of the men was hospitalized.

• A woman in her 60s from Eddy County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

• A man in his 50s from Sandoval County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

• A man in his 70s from San Juan County.

• A woman in her 60s from San Miguel County who was hospitalized and a woman in her 80s from San Miguel County who had underlying conditions.

• A man in his 80s from Santa Fe County who had underlying conditions.

The state now has a total of 89,796 cases, with 30,777 reported recoveries.
