New Mexico tied its single-day record for COVID-19 deaths Sunday, but new cases and hospitalizations are down from recent days.
The Governor’s Office said in a news release Sunday that 44 more people died of complications from COVID-19, tying the single-day record set Dec. 3.
Those whose deaths were reported Sunday included six people from both Chaves and McKinley counties, four each from Doña Ana and Lea counties, and three each from both Bernalillo and San Juan counties.
Thirty-one of the people whose deaths were reported Sunday were hospitalized, and 24 had underlying health conditions, according to the Governor’s Office.
The youngest people who died were two women in their 20s, one from Lea County and one from San Juan County, and the oldest were six people in their 90s.
The number of coronavirus-related deaths in New Mexico is now 1,957.
On Sunday, the state’s seven-day average for new deaths was 29.71, which is inching back up to the record average of 30.14, which was hit on Dec. 5.
The state also reported 1,459 new cases of the infection on Sunday after having at least 1,700 new cases over the four previous days.
Bernalillo County led the state, with 459 new cases. San Juan County had 149; Lea County had 114; both Doña Ana and McKinley counties had 86 and Chaves County had 83.
There were also 40 cases among state inmates, including 27 at the Springer Correctional Center.
On Sunday, 878 people were hospitalized with the disease around the state, down from 907 reported Saturday and 932 reported Friday.
New Mexico now has a total of 119,800 COVID-19 cases, with 44,130 recoveries.
