Card and board game lovers have a new place to expand their collections or try something new with the opening of Old Town Hobbies & Games.
The new game store opened at 2044 South Plaza NW in Old Town in early December, and owner Joe Benitez said the community has embraced the store with open arms.
Benitez, who owns the store with his wife, Gabrielle, said a game and hobby store presented itself as a good business option with many people spending more time inside.
“Everyone's got to stay home and stay entertained somehow right now so let's try and cater to that,” he said. “Let's open up a game store, sell a lot of board games, a lot of things everyone can take home and just have fun.”
Benitez said in the short time since the store has been open, he has seen enthusiasts of every type come in.
“It's been kind of random across the board, to be honest,” he said. “We have tried to kind of get a little bit of everything.”
He said the store's catalog of games extends from Dungeons and Dragons to educational games for children.
Games aren't just the basis for his business. Benitez said his entire family is fond of games. He said board games have helped his two children with special needs find something they enjoy doing.
“Games for them is really a way for them to dive-in and connect and kind of just escape for themselves,” he said. “… I just wanted to offer that for everyone.”
Since opening, Benitez said there has been decent business and he enjoys his shop's location in Old Town.
“We've been welcomed into the Old Town community by everyone and they're really supportive,” he said.
