New Mexico continued to see the rolling average of COVID-19 cases trend downward as the Department of Health announced 921 new cases in an update Friday afternoon. However, an additional 33 deaths from the virus keeps that average high.
The averages currently sit at 847 cases and 29 deaths a day. This time last month it was 1,361 cases and 28 deaths a day.
Nine of the most recent deaths were from Bernalillo while six were from San Juan County. All but seven of the 33 people who died had reported underlying conditions.
The deceased ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s, although the death toll included a man in his 30s from San Juan County, with no underlying conditions, and a woman in her 20s from Lincoln County.
Bernalillo and Doña Ana counties recorded the majority of new cases with 208 and 136, respectively. There were also 26 new cases among inmates at the Penitentiary of New Mexico in Santa Fe County and seven new cases among inmates at the Lea County Correctional Facility.
New Mexico has now totaled 167,731 COVID-19 cases and 3,077 deaths from the virus since the pandemic hit.
There are currently 624 people hospitalized with the virus across the state and 92,109 have been designated as having recovered by the DOH.
