SANTA FE — Public visitations and a funeral Mass are scheduled for next week for state House Speaker Ben Lujan, his office announced.
The Nambé Democrat died Tuesday night after battling lung cancer for three years.
Gov. Susana Martinez has ordered flags across the state to be flown at half-staff in Lujan’s honor from sunrise Saturday, Dec. 22, until sundown Saturday, Dec. 29.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, Dec. 29, at 9 a.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe.
On Thursday, Dec. 27, a visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Rotunda of the state Capitol, where Lujan represented a Santa Fe County district in the House for 38 years and served as House speaker for the past 12 years.
A second visitation is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 28, at 5:30 p.m. at the Ben Lujan Gymnasium at Pojoaque Valley High School. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.
Following Saturday’s Mass at the Cathedral, Lujan will be buried at Sagrado Corazon de Jesus Cemetery in Nambé.
The Lujan family — which includes his son, U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján, D-N.M. — has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the University of New Mexico Cancer Center or to the Speaker Ben Lujan Scholarship Memorial Fund at any Century Bank branch.
