SANTA FE, N.M. — The New Mexico House of Representatives has elected Rep. Ken Martinez of Grants as the new speaker of the House.
Martinez, a Democrat, succeeds Ben Lujan, who died last month after a long battle against lung cancer.
Martinez outpaced GOP Rep. Tom Taylor of Farmington in the vote for House speaker. The final vote, which was widely expected, was 38-32, with all House members voting along party lines.
Before the leadership election, all 70 House members took the oath of office, administered by Secretary of State Dianna Duran.
Gov. Susana Martinez will soon be making her way to the House floor to deliver her third State of the State address.
