5:15am — Man Caught With 500 Lbs. of Pot Near Lordsburg

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Convicted felon from Douglas, Ariz., picked up by Border Patrol Tuesday night. 

Border Patrol agents arrested 37-year-old Juan Lopez-Rodriguez of Douglas, Ariz., on a county road near Lordsburg Tuesday night after they discovered 42 bundles of marijuana worth more than $404,000 in his pickup truck, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported. 

Further investigation found that Lopez-Rodriguez was a convicted felon with a criminal history that included assaults, arrests for disorderly conduct and weapons charges, the Sun-News said.

Border Patrol agents from Douglas alerted Lordsburg agents around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday to be on the lookout for a pickup truck that crossed the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona and was headed for New Mexico, the paper reported.

Lordsburg agents found Lopez-Rodriguez’s truck stopped on the shoulder of Hidalgo County Road 1, according to a Border Patrol news release.

According to the Border Patrol, agents in the Lordsburg station have seized more than 1,760 pounds of marijuana, valued at more than $1.4 million, since Saturday, the Sun-News reported.
