ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Man would have celebrated 6th anniversary this month
A Truth or Consequences man was killed in Iraq on Friday after the vehicle he was riding in flipped over, killing the soldiers riding in the back, the man’s father-in-law said Tuesday.
Darrell Fernandez, 25, went to high school in T or C and married his high school sweetheart Katrina shortly after graduation, said Katrina’s father Richard Fair. Fernandez enlisted in the Army right after high school, and was based at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs.
Fair said Fernandez was a mechanic for the Army, and hoped to one day either work as a civilian mechanic or in law enforcement. He did not have any children, but had hoped to have children after he returned permanently from Iraq, Fair said.
It was Fernandez’s third tour of duty in Iraq, and he was most recently sent there Dec. 19. Fair said the military is still investigating what caused the crash that killed Fair.
