NAME: Wayne Davenport and Patty Komko
TITLE: Chairman and president, respectively
ORGANIZATION: Leadership New Mexico

What is Leadership New Mexico and how did it come to be the force that it is today? In 1995, a small group identified the essential and unmet need for a nonpartisan, independent and volunteer-driven organization dedicated to the development of informed leaders from all parts of our large and diverse state. Through the hard work of numerous volunteers, their vision has become the Leadership New Mexico of the past seventeen years. The organization has evolved into four programs: the Core Program, Local Government Leadership Program, Connect New Mexico Program and the Alumni Program.

Leadership New Mexico participants make an investment of their time that enriches New Mexico’s future, as well as their own. The organization provides an educational experience for current and emerging leaders and has a significant and positive impact on our state and communities. For 17 years, we have provided nearly 1,100 business, community and government leaders unique and valuable insights into New Mexico’s many opportunities and challenges. Alumni from 74 communities and more than 50 industries including health care, government, banking, accounting, law, education, oil and gas, high tech, farming and the nonprofit sectors, go on to address those issues with deeper understanding.

The Leadership New Mexico Core Program creates a setting that allows established leaders from every corner of our state to engage in open and constructive learning about New Mexico. The diversity of perspectives and mutual respect of participants, the unparalleled knowledge and expertise of the speakers and in-depth exposure to the communities in which program sessions take place set the Leadership New Mexico Core Program apart. The program consists of six sessions held in different locations across New Mexico over a ten-month period and covers topics related to health and human services, economic development, education, environment and natural resources, crime and justice and government. Graduates emerge with passion and determination to help make New Mexico a better place to live, work and raise a family.

The Local Government Leadership Program, a partnership with the New Mexico Municipal League, the New Mexico Association of Counties, and the New Mexico School Board Association is a program for county and municipal officials and members of the New Mexico National Guard, regional councils of governments and local school boards. The Local Government Leadership Program meets for two sessions in different locations.

Leadership New Mexico launched Connect New Mexico “The Next Generation of Leadership” in 2007. Connect New Mexico is a program for business professionals ages 25-40 that covers systems and structures in New Mexico during three sessions across the state.

Graduates from all of these programs also emerge as members of a statewide network of graduates that maintain contact with each over the course of many years. One facet of the networking opportunities is the Alumni Program that provides networking opportunities for all Leadership New Mexico graduates with social and educational events throughout the year. Many graduates also continue their involvement in Leadership New Mexico through extensive volunteer service on the Board of Directors and program committees.

In all of its programs, Leadership New Mexico creates a supportive and collaborative environment for learning and the exchange of ideas. With roots firmly planted in communities across the state, Leadership New Mexico is enthusiastic about the continued growth of the programs and the ability of their alumni to solve the challenges facing our great state. Leadership New Mexico’s alumni have the opportunity to improve the livelihood of families and businesses in the state as well as preserve the culture of New Mexico. They are a group of the most-talented, accomplished and dedicated leaders in the state who serve on hundreds of boards, oversee thousands of employees and play an active role in governing the state. Leadership New Mexico’s alumni are actively involved in local, state and national issues and their passion is evident through the positive work they are doing in their communities. As Leadership New Mexico continues its success in the future, even more alumni will emerge with a positive attitude and a drive to advocate for a better New Mexico.

As Patty Komko, president, shares, “Thank you to our dedicated volunteers, speakers and sponsors. They share the collective belief that New Mexico’s future prosperity depends upon the quality of its leadership. We are confident that Leadership New Mexico will continue to accomplish the mission of inspiring leaders to make a difference, create a better future and touch thousands of lives across New Mexico.”
