9:27 p.m. —Police have identified the suspect and the victim in the murder on the 1100 block of Cerrillos Road on Tuesday.
Police said Octivio Jesus Suarez, 38, was arrested within one hour of being identified as the suspect. Officers arrested him just as he was getting ready to leave town, police said.
The victim, Michael Garris, 38, was rushed to the hospital Tuesday night after a drunk woman drove to a police scene and alerted officers to Garris’ injuries as he lay in the backseat. He later died.
A man in his late thirties who was taken to University Hospital with a gunshot wound on Monday later died, police said.
Albuquerque police detectives were still trying to unravel a series of events that began when APD dispatch got a 911 call at about 9:30 p.m. Monday about a man who had been shot in the area of 98th and Sage SW.
Police rushed to the scene but could find no victim or crime scene.
Soon after, a woman stopped at a separate police scene and showed officers a man in her back seat who had suffered a gunshot wound.
The victim was taken by ambulance to University Hospital where he died, according to an email from police spokeswoman Tasia Martinez.
Officers determined that the shooting had taken place in the 1100 block of Cerrillos Road SW. Detectives processed the scene, Martinez said.
Detectives were unable to interview the woman because she was highly intoxicated. She was booked into jail on unrelated charges and warrants, and was to be interviewed later.
Police are withholding the name of the woman until detectives can determine what her involvement is in the case, and to learn what she may have witnessed, Martinez said.
Positive identification of the shooting victim hasn’t been made, and relatives haven’t been notified.
Martinez said the investigation is in its early stages, and is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call 242-COPS.
