Lawmakers square off tonight on basketball court

SANTA FE – New Mexico lawmakers will exchange filibusters for jump shots tonight, when they take the court for the annual legislative basketball game.

The bipartisan contest, which will be held at the Santa Fe High School gymnasium, pits the House “Aggies” against the Senate “Lobos.”

Top House hoopsters include Reps. Terry McMillan of Las Cruces, James Strickler of Farmington and Bill McCamley of Mesilla Park.

On the Senate side, Sens. Howie Morales of Silver City, Bill O’Neill of Albuquerque and Cliff Pirtle of Roswell are expected to carry much of the scoring load.

The House will be seeking to keep legislative bragging rights, as the chamber won a hotly contested game last year.

The game is held as a charity event to benefit the University of New Mexico Cancer Center. Tickets for the showdown, which begins at 7 p.m., cost $5 at the door.
