Artesia man killed by agents in Carlsbad

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — An Artesia man was killed late Monday morning at a Carlsbad motel after he allegedly confronted Pecos Valley Drug Task Force Agents who were trying to serve him with an arrest warrant, the Carlsbad Current-Argus reported.

As agents were waiting for other officers to arrive at the Motel 6 at 3824 National Parks Highway, the 35-year-old man, whose name has not been released, reportedly confronted them, and shots were fired, according to a Carlsbad Police Department news release.

The suspect was injured and taken to Carlsbad Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

Police have declined to say whether the man was armed or who may have fired the first shot, the Current-Argus said.
