6:45am — Pfeffer Recovering From Heart Attack

Former Santa Fe city councilor undergoes quadruple-bypass surgery in Nebraska.

Santa Fe city councilors heard Wednesday night that their former colleague, 62-year-old David Pfeffer, had suffered a heart attack and was recovering in his new hometown of Moline, Ill., The New Mexican reported this morning.

Pfeffer had been in Santa Fe for Memorial Day weekend to gather belongings at his old apartment, drove to Denver to visit his mother and was on his way to Illinois when he began to suffer chest pains, a Santa Fe friend, Bernabe Romero, told The New Mexican.

The former maverick city councilor underwent quadruple-bypass surgery at a hospital in Kearney, Neb., and has since been working a few hours a day at his new job at the Rock Island Arsenal Garrison in Moline, according to Romero.

Pfeffer was a conservative who often was at odds with his more liberal colleagues on the City Council, switched his registration from Democrat to Republican and was an unsuccessful candidate for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate in 2006, The New Mexican reported.

City Councilor Rebecca Wurzburger made the announcement at Wednesday's council meeting.

"I'm going to do my best to raise some financial resources to help him through this difficult time," Wurzburger told her colleagues.
