Meredith wasn't wearing a helmet as he traveled westbound on Central shortly before 8 this morning and was going about 35 to 40 mph when he switched from the center lane to the left lane at Juan Tabo and ran into a car that had pulled to a stop, Hoffman said.

He died of his injuries after being taken to a local hospital, Hoffman said.

9:05am UPDATE: Police continue to investigate the scene of this morning's collision between a bicycle and a car shortly before 8 a.m. near Juan Tabo and Central, and the bicyclist has been taken to a local hospital in "very serious, critical condition," APD spokeswoman Trish Hoffman told 770 KKOB Radio.

"He may not live," Hoffman told the station.

8:20am UPDATE: Westbound Central was down to one lane near the site of this morning's collision between a car and bicycle and that may be closed soon as accident investigators sort out what happened, according to 770 KKOB Radio's traffic reporter Helen Wheels.

Drivers are urged to use Lomas or Interstate 40 as alternate routes, Wheels suggests.

8:05am — Crash Closes Eastbound Central: A possibly fatal collision involving a bicyclist shuts Central near Juan Tabo.

Albuquerque Police Department spokeswoman Trish Hoffman confirms there's a "bad wreck" that happened just minutes ago between a bicyclist and a vehicle at Central and Juan Tabo that has caused police to shut down eastbound Central from Juan Tabo to Morris.

No details yet, but the bicyclist is in very bad shape, Hoffman tells us.
