Rep. Luciano “Lucky” Varela, D-Santa Fe, the chairman of the Legislative Finance Committee, said today he has no plans to step down from the House seat he has held since 1987.
Varela, a retired state worker and noted budget expert, was taken to the hospital during this year’s legislative session after collapsing in his Capitol office.
However, Varela returned to the Roundhouse the following day to take part in the final hours of the 60-day legislative session.
And the 14-term lawmaker told me during today’s meeting of the interim Revenue Stabilization and Tax Policy Committee that he plans to run for re-election next year in House District 48, provided he remains healthy.
Another long-serving House member, Rep. Henry “Kiki” Saavedra, D-Albuquerque, said yesterday he will not seek re-election in 2014.
