Area athletes collecting All-State, All-District honors

The Rio West area was well represented Friday as coaches announced the Class 5A All-State baseball teams.

Volcano Vista senior second baseman/pitcher Andre Vigil was chosen the Player of the Year. Rio Rancho’s Ron Murphy was Coach of the Year.

Vigil was on the 5A first team, along with Rio Rancho third baseman Brandon Garcia, Rams’ catcher Marcus Martinez, Rio Rancho pitcher Brendan Wanchek, Cibola pitcher Phil Trujillo and Volcano Vista utility player Cameron Fite.

Area players on the All-State second team were Volcano Vista shortstop Brock Sullivan, West Mesa utility Luis Ledezma and Rio Rancho outfielder Eddy Vasquez.

No Class 4A All-State team was released to the Journal on Friday.


All-District teams for baseball and softball have been announced, as well. Here are the first-team selections from area schools:

BASEBALL: Volcano Vista’s Vigil was named the District 1-5A Player of the Year, and the Hawks’ Kevin Andersh is the Coach of the Year.

Other Hawks on the first team were Sullivan, outfielder Josh Day and Fite.

Class 5A state champion Rio Rancho was represented on the first team by Vasquez, Wanchek, Garcia and Martinez.

Trujillo of Cibola was named to the first team at pitcher and first base. His teammate Drew Janis was a first-team outfielder.

Cleveland’s lone first-team choice was shortstop Kevin Kilcommons, who shared honors with Volcano Vista’s Sullivan.

  • Valley and West Mesa both had two players on the District 5-5A squad. Steven Bishop and Davi Mondragon were chosen from the Vikings, with Ledezma and Marco Manjarrez going from the Mustangs.
  • In District 5-4A, St. Pius players on the All-District first team were third baseman Andrew Muhlberger, catcher Adam Baros, outfielder Cody Bower, pitcher Kent Keeling and designated hitter Kendrick Sanchez.
  • First-team selections from Bernalillo in District 2-4A were outfielder Aaron Griffith, infielder/pitcher Adam Chavez and shortstop/catcher/pitcher Izzy Chavarria.

SOFTBALL: Jade Gray of Volcano Vista, a junior catcher, was the 1-5A Defensive Player of the Year. Cibola shortstop Jasmine Mitchell was the Offensive Player of the Year.

For the Cougars, also on the first team were second baseman Brittany Baca, third baseman Jaclyn Pino and pitcher Nicole Shack.

For the Hawks on the first team, joining Gray were shortstop Victoria Castro and first baseman Taylor Sargent.

Rio Rancho’s first-teamers were third baseman Jessie Roane and shortstop BreOnna Castañeda.

Cleveland pitcher/infielder/outfielder Brooke Hodgson, Storm third baseman/shortstop Gen Gutierrez and Cleveland’s Karlie Peck rounded out the first team.

  • Three Valley players were on the 5-5A squad: Kristyna Garcia, Kayla Vargas and Bayley Legarreta.

Angelica Lujan and Ilianna Perez were West Mesa’s two first-team choices.

  • St. Pius swept District 5-4A honors with Player of the Year Nicole Madrid (pitcher) and Coach of the Year Tim O’Meara.

Gaby Mora, Vanessa Garcia, Monee Barela and Katie Johnson were St. Pius’ first-team players.

  • Junior pitcher Demetria Magdalena of Bernalillo was the 2-4A Player of the Year. Also on the first team from the Spartans were third baseman Deanna Lopez, first baseman Charleen Foster, catcher Daniella Cordova and outfielder Rachel Duran.
