Texas sets aside $5 million to sue us over water

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Texas has set aside $5 million to pay for its lawsuit against New Mexico over Rio Grande water. Kate Galbraith reports:

Suing neighbors over water can be expensive.

A paragraph deep in the Texas budget shows that the state has allocated $5 million in fiscal year 2014 for its legal battle to extricate more river water from New Mexico. Texas has already hired a California lawyer to represent it against New Mexico in the case, which the U.S. Supreme Court could decide to hear.

The suit alleges that groundwater pumping in southern New Mexico is draining the river, depriving Texans of water that ought rightfully be theirs. More on the suit here.
