‘Travelin’ Cabaret’ stuck in ABQ

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Cast interacts with audiences, performs at various venues

Blackout Theatre is always pushing the envelope. This time it is taking a new project to different venues.

The theater company is presenting “Extravaganza! A Travelin’ Cabaret” from Thursday, June 27 through June 30.

“We were brainstorming new ways to find a different audience,” says Barney Lopez, a spokesman for the group. “We thought about trying to put some live music into the piece.”

Lopez says “Extravaganza!” is a chance for the cast members to interact with the audience during the performances from bands.

The show follows a cast of characters who have broken down in Albuquerque and need to raise money to fix their tour bus and get back on the road.

Lopez says each member developed his or her own character. They include a juggler, a tango couple, hula hoop hipster girls, a crazy house band, two competing starlets and a magician.

“I’m the magician and will do a piece of my show,” he says. “During my show, I have trouble with the tricks because of the altitude.”

Lopez says there will be a band performing before the show and after.

He says while the first band is performing, the cast of characters will be interacting with the audience.

“We want to create a friendly atmosphere,” he says. “It’s one way of bringing two worlds together. Not many people who go out to bars would go see theater. We’re trying to show that the theater is fun and not to be scared of it.”

Lopez says Blackout also wanted to perform at various locations around the Duke City.

“We understand that a lot of people don’t like to go Downtown, so we’ve given them options,” he says. “We’re wanting to bring entertainment to all areas of Albuquerque. It’s a fun night of music and theater.”

The events are as follows:

• 8 p.m. Thursday, June 27 at Tricklock Performance Laboratory, 110 Gold SW. All ages and Carlos the Tall will perform.
