Updated at 7:50am — Trio of Freeway Accidents Clog Big I

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Traffic woes mount following crashes on I-25 and I-40 this morning.

8:40am UPDATE: Traffic is now flowing past the scene of accidents on northbound Interstate 25 over Menaul and on eastbound Interstate 40, according to 770 KKOB Radio's Helen Wheels.

8:07am UPDATE: Eastbound Interstate 40 cleared for traffic following an accident near Carlisle, but traffic is still backing up, according to KKOB's Helen Wheels.

Westbound I-40 is especially backed up with drivers trying to get on northbound I-25, because of the earlier five-car crash that occurred over Menaul, according to KKOB.

Crash cleanup is under way following a five-car chain-reaction collision on northbound Interstate 25 approaching Comanche about an hour ago, and another crash is reported this morning on eastbound Interstate 40 east of the Big I, according to 770 KKOB Radio's traffic reporter Helen Wheels, who also reports crashes on I-40 approaching 12th Street.

The upshot is that traffic is thoroughly congested approaching the interchange, and Wheels urges drivers to avoid the freeways altogether, if possible.

KOB-TV is reporting that the northbound frontage road on I-25 is still flowing smoothly, but two lanes of northbound I-25 are still shut down, stalling traffic all the way back to westbound I-40 trying to get on I-25 to the north.

Two center lanes are blocked on eastbound I-40 near Carlisle following another accident, where police are reporting at least one injury.

Police are also on scene near I-40 and 12th Street, KOB-TV reported.

The far left northbound lane and the Comanche exit lane are still still open, according to KOB-TV.
