Crews report progress on Silver Fire

SILVER CITY (AP) — Crews are making progress against a blistering blaze in southern New Mexico’s Gila National Forest.

Fire officials say the 214-square-mile Silver Fire was 59 percent contained late Tuesday after nearly a month of erratic growth.

Officials say teams will now assess post-fire conditions in the area to recommend treatments to protect life, property, and water quality. Plan will begin as soon as the blaze is fully contained.

Gov. Susana Martinez says the Silver Fire is an example of the dangers that remain in New Mexico while the state continues to battle extreme drought conditions. Martinez has banned all fireworks from state lands.
