NM grants permit for new waste transfer station

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico environment officials have issued a permit for a planned waste transfer station and recycling center in northern New Mexico.

Under the permit, Rio Arriba County and the North Central Solid Waste Authority will be able to collect solid waste, construction debris and recyclable materials at the new station.

The Environment Department says the Alcalde station will give county residents access to recycling at a reasonable cost.

The 9,600-square-foot station will be just north of Espanola. It’s expected to open in the first quarter of 2014.

Officials say the building is designed to handle up to 150 tons of waste per day.
