ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In my previous blog item, I wondered why Daniel Santiago hadn’t played for Puerto Rico in the recent FIBA Americas championships in Las Vegas, Nev.
Thanks to the marvels of cyberspace, the answer was easily found. The former Lobo and Del Norte High School graduate has retired from the Puerto Rican national team.
Clearly, that decision (and how and when it was delivered) didn’t go down well in Puerto Rico. Santiago is only 30, or perhaps 31. The 7-foot, 1-inch center, who played in the NBA for Phoenix and Milwaukee and is a longtime professional star in Italy, has several good years left.
Evidently, they won’t be spent playing for Puerto Rico.
