ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Challenge Cup Set For Rainmakers GC The Sun Country Section’s top 20 PGA Golf pros square off with the area’s top 20 amateurs in the annual Challenge Cup on Monday at Rainmakers Golf Course in Ruidoso. The event has a format similar to the Ryder Cup, with the teams playing team matches in the morning and individual matches in the afternoon. The amateurs won, outright, last year for the first time since 1999 and trail the series 27-14. They tied in 2000. Arroyo del Oso’s Bill Harvey, Isleta’s Mike Ciolek and Las Cruces’ Dan Koesters are among the pros while Albuquerque’s Steve Saunders and Brandon Putnam and Rio Rancho’s Tim Madigan are part of the amateur squad.

… Albuquerque’s Ryan Baker shot a 6-under 66 recently at Woodmont Country Club in Tamarac, Fla., to earn his first victory on the Minor League Golf Tour. The win was worth $650.
… The third annual American Legion Post 99 charity golf tournament is Aug. 17 at Tijeras Arroyo Golf Course (KAFB). The $65 entry fee includes greens fees, range balls, cart, welcome bag, contests and a steak fry. The event is a two-person scramble with a blind draw for teams.
