Quick Hits: Ortega Gets Atrisco Hoops Gig

Adrian Ortega has been hired as the boys basketball coach at Atrisco Heritage Academy High School, Mark Garcia, the school’s athletics director, said Tuesday.

Ortega coached Oñate to a 17-13 record and round two of the Class 5A playoffs in 2008-09, his lone season at the Las Cruces school. Prior to that, he coached at Sandia for four seasons.

“We really liked his philosophy, his experience and the work ethic he brings,” Garcia said, adding that Atrisco Heritage interviewed four of 12 applicants for the position.

Ortega replaces Landon Porter, whose contract was not renewed after last season. Atrisco Heritage will compete at the junior varsity level in 2009-2010 before moving to varsity basketball the following year.

Lobos Banned From Downtown

University of New Mexico football coach Mike Locksley has instituted a program policy prohibiting players from spending their evenings Downtown.

The rule stems from an incident in which two Lobos were arrested outside The Library Bar and Grill after an altercation with bouncers early Sunday morning.
