ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico volleyball team will face a stiff challenge today, taking on UTEP and host Arizona at the Arizona Invitational in Tucson.
The Lobos (7-2) will try to shake off a poor performance Wednesday in which they lost at home to TCU in four sets. It won’t be easy against a UTEP squad that is 7-4 and recently took New Mexico State to five sets. Arizona is 8-0 and ranked 21st nationally.
New Mexico and UTEP will square off at 2 p.m. The Lobos meet Arizona at 8 p.m. The tournament concludes Sunday, when UNM takes on Tulane (4-3) in a 2 p.m. match.
Marquez Wins Via 2nd-Round Knockout
SANTA YNEZ, Calif. — Albuquerque boxer Archie Ray Marquez defeated Florida’s Mario Galán by second-round knockout in a junior lightweight (130-pound) bout.
Marquez improved his record to 7-0 with six knockouts. Galán is 4-6 with three KOs.
LOBO SOCCER: In Houston, the University of New Mexico women’s soccer team played Rice (2-4-2) to a 1-1 doubleovertime draw. Sophomore Jael Fanning scored New Mexico’s (6-0-2) lone goal.
… The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team (3-2) got second-half goals from Simon Ejdemyr and Stephen Brown to earn a 2-1 victory over UC Davis (2-4) at the UNM Soccer Complex.
