ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men's soccer team continues to be haunted by the University of Portland.
The 18th-ranked Pilots beat the Lobos 2-1 on Sunday in the final game of the TLC Invitational at the UNM Soccer Complex.
Portland elminated New Mexico in the first round of last season's NCAA Tournament.
Sunday's loss, Lobo head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. was "eerily reminiscent" of Portland's 2-1 overtime victory last November.
"We created a lot of chances," he said. "Maybe we didn't play with the urgency we needed to the first half. There was a lot of good soccer and we didn't put it away."
Lobo redshirt freshman Lawrence Robledo scored his first career goal off an assist by senior Michael Reed early in the second half.
Portland tied the game a few minutes later at 54:33 when Pilot Jarad vanSchaik struck from the top of the goalie box.
Portland's Ryan Kawulok picked up a rebound and scored at 88:46.
The Lobos (2-1-1) had 17 shots to the Pilots' four. UNM keeper Justin Holmes had one save.
UNM's David Murphy and Lance Rozeboom were named to the all-tournament team.
LOBO WOMEN: In Dallas, SMU handed UNM its first loss of the season, beating the Lobos 1-0.
Senior Liz Lambert had two of the Lobo's three shots on goal as New Mexico (4-1-3) struggled to create scoring opportunities. Sophomore goalkeeper Kelli Cornell had six saves.
"It's tough when you have been physically beat up the past two weekends on the road," head coach Kit Vela said.
