ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach played it coy Friday when asked about Internet-fueled speculation that he will take over University of New Mexico football.
In interview on KRLD-AM in Dallas, Leach said, "All I've heard on that is just on a rumor level. Mike Locksley's a good person, a good coach. He's had some adversity and hopefully he gets through it," according to the Dallas Morning News website. "At some point I plan to get in at the right situation, right time and all that. As far as New Mexico, I haven't heard anything on it beyond just some blogs that have been forwarded to me. I don't know any more about that. "
Asked if UNM would be a sufficiently attractive job, Leach replied, "I think New Mexico is a great program. It's always had really good potential and it's a great state. But like I said, they've got Mike Locksley and we'll just let it ride at that."
The Leach-to-UNM speculation took root here Thursday. Gerges Scott, longtime TV producer, fanned the flames by writing on his Facebook page that it could happen next month. Later, he called it speculation based on information "from unnamed sources."
