Bregman Named USA Baseball Player of Year

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque Academy’s Alex Bregman is one of a kind.

The Chargers’ junior baseball player earned that distinction Thursday when he became the first high school player ever to win the USA Baseball Richard W. “Dick” Case Player of the Year award.

Bregman led the 16U national team to the COPABE “AA”/16U Pan American Baseball Championships gold medal in Lagos de Moreno, Mexico in October. Bregman was the tournament Most Valuable Player and earned all-tournament team honors. He hit .564 (22-for-39) with two home runs, 17 RBIs and 17 runs scored in nine games. Team USA went 9-0 in the tournament.

Past Player of the Year honorees include Stephen Strasburg (2008) and Ryan Zimmerman (2004) of the Washington Nationals and Ben Sheets (2000) of the Oakland Athletics.
